High School Experiences
28 September 2011

High School is filled with different experiences for everyone. Who they become depends on the teachers that they have and the extra-curricular activities that they are involved in. In my own life, I was in numerous activities through the school and had amazing teachers. My high school shaped where I am now academically.

I have been in Girl Scouts since I was in kindergarten. With my mom as my leader, it has always been a significant part of my life. I gained numerous friends due to the activity and have learned how to cooperate as a troop. I also learned how to handle responsibility. We used to organize events, such as the Junior Mystery Weekend where we would put on a haunted house for younger girls. We were responsible for ensuring that the younger girls had an excellent time. I have just finished my Gold Award (the highest award that a girl scout can earn) and am currently submitting the paperwork. I am a lifelong member of Girl Scouts of America and hope to be the leader of a troop if I have a daughter someday.

I have been playing softball since I was in ninth grade. I played exclusively for my high school team, the Chariho Chargers, and was captain for my senior season. I would give anything to back to Chariho softball because I had the time of my life. During practices, my friends and I would mess around and try to outdo one another by making better plays. The bus rides after winning games were especially memorable because we were giddy from triumph and were just having such a blast being together. I really learned how to make friends from softball. While a normal friendship may take weeks to really develop, we were like sisters after only a few days. In a sport where you depend on your teammates in order to succeed, you quickly learn how to trust one another. Also, we were with each other all of the time because of games and practicing so we eventually just got used to one-another’s constant company and began to crave it when we were not together. I still hang out with most of my teammates on a regular basis.

In high school, one teacher really stood out from the others. Mrs. Volpe, my eleventh grade English teacher, was my favorite. She is a hilarious and caring woman. Her teaching methods were mainly to have fun while still conveying important information. While we were reading The Great Gatsby, which I did not care for at all, she made me enjoy the story more by relating it to modern society’s gossip stories. She pointed out how the drama of people cheating on each other was very similar to the Tiger Woods story. By connecting the topics taught in class to something that was relevant to me, I was able to understand the concepts better. Mrs. Volpe would always joke around during her class and would even go on donut runs that I organized. She would say to me, “Whenever you guys want Allie’s Donuts, just tell me what to get and bring in the money. I’ll pick it up on my way to work.” A few times during the course of the year we would have the donut parties and we were completely content to munch on our treats while listening to her teach. Even after I was no longer in her class, she would always smile and talk to me in the hallways whenever we saw one another.

High school is the main reason why I am where I am academically. In high school, I was able to take more difficult courses than in middle school, and was able to challenge myself more. By taking Calculus for example, I was able to learn not only the subject, but how to ask for help when I needed it. By learning to seek out help when needed and balance a heavier course load, I was able to improve my academic standings. High school shaped who I am as a person.
